Water-repellent surfaces offer great potential for use in applications subject to tribological stress. The NaSuKoMi research project is developing durable superhydrophobic surfaces which, thanks to an innovative self-healing mechanism, retain their water-repellent properties permanently even under mechanical stress. The aim of the project is to sustainably improve the functionality and service life of components in demanding operating environments.
The project focuses on the development of microcapsules that are integrated into plastic compounds and anti-friction coatings. These contain water-repellent substances which are released when the surface wears or becomes damaged, thereby continuously renewing the hydrophobic properties. In this way, the protective effect can be maintained in the long term without the need for repeated surface treatment.
The technology developed opens up a wide range of potential applications wherever components are exposed to weathering and mechanical stress. These include, amongst others, locking systems and hinges in vehicles, roller shutters, external sunshades, wind turbines and other industrial applications. By preventing ice formation and the effects of moisture, the functionality, reliability and service life of the components can be improved.
BECHEM is contributing its many years of experience in the development of innovative anti-seize coatings and tribological coating systems to the research project. The focus is on the development of microcapsule technology and the formulation of superhydrophobic surfaces for tribological applications. Together with the SKZ Plastics Centre, the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research (IAP) and 4D Concepts GmbH, BECHEM is working on a pioneering technology that enables durable water-repellent surfaces for a wide range of industrial applications.
